This book took place in 1999 when North Carolina was having the worst storms on record.

The main character is Denise Holton, who was traveling to Edenton, North Carolina with her son Kyle (4 years old) in the back seat.

Denise dedicated her life to her son Kyle and he was a full time job for her as he required special attention for a “speech”/”language” disability. As a single mother, she set out to do her best. She worked four nights a week, five hour shifts and earned enough to get what she needed. She became a master of budgeting, a master of cutting back. She had $238.00 in the bank and her car is 19 years old.

The reason she was a single mom is because the father is Brett Cosgrove, and he was the kind of man who turned heads. She was 23 and in her sophomore year of teaching, her friend Susan introduced Denise to Brett, who was in town for a brief investment banking deal and they basically had a “one night stand” that led to her getting pregnant. of your wonderful son Kyle. Her father wanted nothing to do with her or her baby.

“She worried about Kyle all the time, and while all moms care about their kids, she knew it wasn’t the same thing. Sometimes she wished she knew someone else who had a child with special needs that was more like her son Kyle. At least then someone would understand. At least then she would have someone to talk to, to compare notes with, someone to offer a shoulder when she needed to cry. Other mothers woke up every day and wondered if their son would ever have a friend? Friend? Have you ever? Other moms worried if their kids would go to a regular school, play sports, or go to prom?

As Denise was riding in her car with Kyle in the back seat, a doe, fully grown on this stormy night, froze in front of her car; She knew that she would hit him! When she swerved to avoid hitting the deer, she crashed into a tree and her head hit the steering wheel and she felt excruciating pain in her forehead and suddenly she fell unconscious.

The next thing he hears is “Hey lady, are you okay?” All he could say is KYLE! Where is my sound? He wasn’t in the car! Taylor McAden was the man from the fire department who found Denise first. This led a community of firefighters and volunteers to find Kyle in a swampy area near the crash site. Taylor McAden found a blanket in the marshy areas about 50 yards from where Denise had crashed. Hours passed before Taylor found Kyle and took him to the hospital where Denise was taken for her injuries. Since Kyle could barely speak, this task of finding him was more difficult than a normal case.

Taylor’s mother, Judy, always wanted him to find a wife and settle down. But for some reason, “love” wasn’t her thing. Their relationships would start off great and he would then lose interest. But this is not the case with how he felt about Denise as the relationship develops. In the end, they end up happily ever after with Taylor adopting Kyle as her son.

Quote I love: “You will come across people in your life who will say all the right words at the right time. But in the end, you must always judge them by their actions. It is the actions, not the words, that matter.” “
