The average speed of the standard golf cart is a paltry (and top) 15 mph. So going from one hole to the next can be a very slow process. But, there are some ways you can make your cart lighter and also faster. Many companies sell different items to help you with this task.

The first step is to try to get rid of the excess weight; anything from extra cup holders to fancy unnecessary rims on the wheels.

A very simple but often overlooked improvement is to make sure the underside of the car is clear of debris. Mud and other hardened debris will slow the car down a lot.

You can also add bigger tires. The larger the tire, the greater the revolution, and therefore the greater the speed of the cart. Plus, thicker tires will have more traction to handle faster speeds more effectively (and keep you safe). You can get tires at any golf cart store or even online.

Also make sure your tires are properly inflated. Bad inflation, just like regular vehicles, slows you down.

Installing a higher RPM high speed electric motor will also help the car go a little faster on the road.

You can also completely adjust or remove the governor. The governor limits the maximum speed that the golf cart can reach. These are installed in most cars for security.

If you replace the existing gear sets with one that has a lower ratio, this will also improve the overall speed of the cart. The standard gear configuration on a cart is typically 12.5:1, which produces a top speed of 14 to 15 miles per hour. But an 8:1 gear set will get the speed up to about 20 miles per hour.

If you have an electric golf cart, making it faster involves a few different techniques and can be a bit more difficult.

To increase the speed of your electric cart, you’ll want to get a new battery, one that will maximize the motor’s output. Most electric golf carts are already made to run on a wide range of batteries, so finding one that maximizes performance shouldn’t be a problem.

You can also get a new electric motor if you can’t get a new battery. This may be the only way to increase speed if you realize you are already using the highest possible voltage.

Just like traditional golf carts, you can also upgrade the gear system of electric carts to make them go faster. Electric cars usually have a gear ratio of 8:1. Changing it to 12:1 will increase the speed. However, keep in mind that as the speed of the cart improves, you can understand its ability to tow heavy objects.

Many custom vehicles can do all of this for you, albeit at a much higher price. But with a little know-how and time, you can get your golf cart zipping (safely, of course) from green to green.
