There are times when you simply cannot find any suitable bait for salmon fishing. I have looked at some of the dried and vacuum packed salmon roe in sporting goods stores but frankly I think you may be wasting your money trying to catch a salmon using that so called bait.
The following is a tuna ball recipe that really makes a good alternative to salmon bait. I caught fall salmon using tuna balls caught under corks in tidal waters. I also used tuna balls upstream after fishing a hole for 15-20 minutes with no success using eggs, switched to tuna balls and had guys on my boat catching salmon. Tuna balls work and this is how you can make them:
Tuna balls for salmon fishing
Will need:
1. Premium canned tuna in oil – one can
2. Some old salmon roe that has been in the freezer for a couple of years,
3. Mike’s Glo Scent Oil – Shrimp.
4. Small puffballs – pink.
5. Raspberry jelly – a pack.
6. Wedding voucher – pink or red
7. Wonder Thread gold 6 lbs. monkey works too
In a large bowl:
1. Drain tuna oil and store in a separate container.
2. Mix the gelatin with the Tune to the desired color.
3. Finely chop the roe and combine with tuna and gelatin, leave a few eggs intact.
4. Add a small handful of puff pastry balls, mix,
5. Half a bottle of Mike’s Shrimp Oil, mix (wear rubber gloves to avoid divorce)
6. Cut the wedding valley into 4″ squares.
7. Pour enough mixture into 4″ squares to make a quarter-sized ball, hold corners of bridal valley and use twine to form mixture into a tight ball. Tie tightly and trim off excess bridal valley and place in a clean jar and add attunement oil and let sit overnight.
8. Send this recipe to one or more of your fellow fishermen who use old, dried roe.
