There have been some interesting discussions in all popular African religious forums regarding mediumship, spiritualism, and the differences between the methods used to communicate with the dead. See them below.

What is a spiritist? I think for most this means a person who is a medium who can communicate with the dead and perhaps see, feel and hear them. And you must know how to deal with the different spirits as they present themselves.

What is muertero? A dead man in terms of the terminology I use is the same as a spiritualist. They know how to communicate and work the spirits of good and bad. The spirits are in the same boat as the Deadman as far as I’m concerned. For me they are two different names for the same type of person. The lines are blurred depending on one’s beliefs or background in the areas and knowledge of spiritism.

What are the differences between the two and their practices, if any? I’ve been listening to Boveda versus Voveda recently … which is interesting. I personally communicate and work my dead in my Vault. It is a place for my eyes as well as for practice.

What exactly is “real” spiritism, in your opinion? True spirit in my eyes is ANY form of spiritualism. Be it with Asian, African, Irish influence or anything else. It is communicating with the spirits and learning to work with them in all, if not some, aspects.

Real spiritism is the way you and your guides interact with each other. I believe that the faith you have in what you have is what will work for you. Real spiritism / mediumship is an open book depending on how you were taught to practice it. I don’t think it has a beginning or an end, it has the basic tools you need to get started like sentences, vault, etc. But then, from there, it explains how and why your guides want you to do it.

My guides might tell me that I need a machete covered with 9-color tape on top of my door for my protection and to cut through the negativity … but I can’t go to your house and tell you that the scissors you have on top of the door are wrong because that’s for your protection and how your guides told you they needed the gate protected.
