Since more people are living longer lives today than in the past, several people have decided that the best course of action for them is to age in place, rather than looking for some changes in adaptations, such as moving to smaller places, or some, in a flat, or housing for the elderly or assisted! Where one resides, especially during their so-called Golden Years, is a deeply personal decision, which must be carefully considered, in terms of overall happiness, etc., regarding economic / financial considerations / issues, personal comfort zone, family problems. etc. With that in mind, this article will briefly attempt to consider, examine, review, and discuss 4 reasons why some choose to stay, in their current residence, rather than make a change.

1. Comfort zone; familiarity: Many people develop a close personal relationship, with their homes, especially, for their memories, pleasures, etc! If one can afford it, and is physically capable of staying there, shouldn’t that be the place where a personal matter lives? After all, if you’ve lived somewhere, enjoyed it, are familiar with the area, and meet / exceed your needs, why wouldn’t you want to avoid the challenges of relocation?

2. Neighbors, friends and family: After a period of time, you really love and enjoy your neighbors, or you don’t! If the former is the case, these relationships can be difficult to replicate. The level of trust, understanding, and security in the overall relationship is often reassuring. How many close friends and acquaintances still live in or near the neighborhood? Do many of your relatives, especially children, grandchildren, etc., live in the area?

3. Convenient: The same reasons, you move, when you are younger, to a specific region, and the associated amenities, etc., still apply, when you get older, especially if you are relatively healthy! If your current living conditions are convenient and provide you with peace of mind, happiness, satisfaction, etc., you may want to stay where you are.

Four. Needs / needs for change: How do your current living and housing conditions respond to your current needs? Is it too big for your current needs? Can you reduce your overall housing costs and related maintenance challenges by relocating? Would you be happy in a senior housing community? Has your health deteriorated, either physically or cognitively, so you should seriously consider assisted living?

Don’t feel pressure, neither to move nor to stay! Give yourself a thorough, objective, realistic, pragmatic check-up, from the neck up, and do what’s best for you!
