For a few years, more and more people have turned to those alternative systems that allow water purification in the home. A realization motivated by several factors: incomplete information of the substances contained in the water in the bottle as we have seen, economic savings, protection of the environment and comfort. Just look at the queues at the supermarket; with tons of bottles to take home that will be recycled at considerable cost.

These devices are connected directly to the house faucet or to the main pipe and are capable of filtering the water, making it not only better but also safer for health. The cost of household cleaning products will pay for itself in a few months and will only require maintenance.

Of all home water purification systems, only those with reverse osmosis work well and can remove more than 99% of harmful substances found in tap water, making it the best and safest water of many brands bottled. These plants, in fact, have been used for several years by hospitals, humanitarian organizations such as UNICEF, chemical laboratories and the main beverage companies around the world (ie cold drinks, beer, etc.) to produce and consume pure water. in very large quantities.

The same type of equipment equipped with reverse osmosis is used by many humanitarian and government entities, associations that occur after natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, etc.) to produce perfectly clean water from contaminated sources. Also, some of the bottled water sold every day in supermarkets is nothing more than spring water filtered by reverse osmosis purification systems.

“Good” water must be free or very low in harmful substances such as: chlorine, nitrites, fluorides, chlorides, lead, phosphates, ammonia, bromide, etc. In fact, tap water and bottled water can contain these harmful elements, often with values close to the limits imposed by law. The presence of these harmful elements may depend on groundwater contamination caused by pesticides used in agriculture, by detergents used daily in the home, by lubricating oils disposed of illegally (eg subsoil. However, with reverse osmosis, it can remove the most dangerous and harmful chemical elements by up to 99%, also providing the worst tap water in Italy at levels of extreme purity.

Reverse osmosis is a water purification technology through which a high retention percentage of dissolved and undissolved contaminants is achieved (up to 99% retention of dissolved salts). When two liquids with different salt concentrations are separated by a semi-permeable membrane, a pressure difference is established between both sides of the membrane as a function of the concentration difference. This pressure, called osmotic, forces the pure water to pass less concentration through the side of more concentration until the concentrations are equal.

On the contrary, if the system applies a higher osmotic pressure and vice versa, it is the pure water from the side with the highest concentration that passes to the side with the lowest concentration. This phenomenon, which plays a key role in the metabolism of all living cells, can be used as a desalination or demineralization method, in addition to using very simple means.

Thus, with equipment whose sophistication can increase depending on the quality of water required, or the type of controls that are to be applied, we can obtain irrigation water from wastewater, drinking water from brackish or sea water, purified water from from the drinking water network, etc.
