Who can forget Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn’s raft? Isn’t it amazing that two little boys can build a raft? Is it really easy to build a raft that even kids like Tom and Huck can do?

Here are the instructions on how to build a simple raft:

1. Gather all the materials needed to build a raft.

Gather seven to eight logs. As far as possible, the logs should be the same size in length and thickness. The more they look alike, the better the result of the raft. Base logs must be at least 12 feet long and 12 inches in diameter. Two or three support logs would be needed to support the raft’s locking system. Support logs should be at least seven to eight feet long and at least four to six inches in diameter.

A rope is also needed to tie the logs together.

2. Bring all materials close to shore before construction.

Create an outline of how to build the raft and place all the materials near the shore. Start by cutting the dovetail notch at each end of the base logs. The notches at the bottom should be wider than the notches at the top. The depth of the notches should be at least two inches and the width should be at least four to six inches at the bottom. Make sure the notches follow the dimensions of the support register.

Then cut and shape the support logs with three sides matching the notches. Measure the cut carefully and be precise.

3. Find a place where it is easy to launch the raft.

To launch the raft, place the constructed raft in a place where it is easy to push it into the water. Once that issue is resolved, put the logs together (side by side). Arrange the notches in a straight line. After this, block the notches with the support logs.

Next, tie off the raft supports. Glue can be used to add strength to the raft. A niche could be added to act as a control wheel and can be placed at the rear of the raft.

To create a dry base for the raft floor, add some bush. In addition, hooks can be added to the surface of the raft to tie down potential luggage during long trips. After these final touches, the construction of a raft is done.

In building a raft, cost is not an issue. Logs can be found lying around in one’s area. Rope and other materials are sometimes available in the house and can be purchased at a reasonable price. That’s why Huck and Tom were able to sail with a raft. All they have is the skill of how to build a raft and the materials they got for free.
