Indiscipline among students is on the rise. This is a fact confirmed by daily events in schools and universities. The newspapers are full of reports of riots and indiscipline among students. It has become one of the serious problems facing the country. Students go on strike, resort to cheating and cheating on tests, insult their teachers and principals. They tear pages from library books or pictures from magazines, write dirty things on the walls, etc. and enjoy many other types of antics. They clash with the police, throw stones and bricks at them and practice violence under any pretext.

This widespread malaise and indiscipline among students reflects the indiscipline, lawlessness, and frustration that is prevalent in society. The students alone are not to blame. There is too much political interference in schools and educational institutions. Students are deceived and mistreated by various political parties to serve their selfish ends. Shipments, appointments, transfers, etc. in schools, colleges and universities are not based on merit but on other considerations. Corruption and favoritism run rampant in these temples of learning.

The teachers themselves are corrupt. They are greedy and pursue illegal means of making a quick buck. They do not inspire trust, hope and honesty among students. They indulge in dirty politics and can stoop to any depth to make money. Therefore, there is a crisis of character. Students have no role models. The students find themselves groping in the dark. The rise of cable television and the influence of Western ideas and culture have made the situation even worse. The rapid disintegration of families has also contributed to growing indiscipline among students. There is no character, no values, no morals in society. Students imitate their parents, teachers, leaders, and elders and behave accordingly.

The education given in schools and colleges is totally irrelevant. It is not work oriented. Students do not get proper employment early after finishing their education and training. There is favoritism and nepotism in employment. One has to pay a great deal of money as a bride to secure even a modest job. Students with resources and recommendations get all the good jobs. The reservation of jobs for certain categories of students has made the situation even worse. The merit has been marginalized.

Therefore, students feel cheated, frustrated and disillusioned. When they have no hope or job, they become quite restless and indulge in all kinds of indiscipline. There is no adequate guidance, advice, etc., regarding the selection of study courses and careers. As a result of all this, much of your energy, time, and resources are wasted and you become a victim of indecision. This leads to more and heartbreak.

The classes are overcrowded. There is no personal contact between teachers and students. There is too much pressure on students as they are always expected to get excellent grades. The exam system is also very flawed. It encourages copying, learning from rot and trust in cheap tickets on the market. About a month before the exam, students are dedicated to studying. The rest of the year they are inactive. There are no extracurricular activities that deserve their name. Their energies are not used properly and therefore find expression in violence, discomfort and indiscipline. It has been rightly observed that an empty mind is a devil’s workshop. An ideal hand is even worse.

The problem is serious but not impossible to verify. It is the duty of leaders, educators and teachers to address the problem immediately. There should be no political interference in the running of schools, etc. The entire educational system must be reviewed and oriented towards work. It must be linked to the industry. Teachers should receive better salaries and allowances. They must be held accountable for the results and conduct of the students under their command. There should be no school without adequate facilities for games and sports. More emphasis should be placed on character building, moral education and extracurricular activities. The growing indiscipline and unrest among students is a great danger to our society and must be controlled with everyone’s cooperation. Union elections in schools and universities must not be allowed to be held along political lines. They should function solely as educational associations. Classes and their sections should not be crowded. Only teachers with merits and good character to be appointed in the schools. The privatization of schools should also be encouraged. More money must be spent on education, particularly primary education. There should be liberal scholarships and more for needy and deserving students.
