As a real estate agent, it is difficult to stand out from the crowd. Most venues are saturated with agents and it can be overwhelming trying to find ways to build a customer base. On top of that, when you’re a new agent, it’s easy to feel the need to do everything In the form of marketing and promotion, but with a few simple steps, you can distinguish yourself as the go-to person in your market (and not go broke).

Step 1: Be the source.

Know your community like the back of your hand. Get to know local officials, political figures, and community leaders. Familiarize yourself with the schools, school zones, and their key personnel. Get to know everyone in the HR and relocation departments of the large companies in your area. Get first-hand knowledge of all the things you can do in and around your area.

Step 2: get involved.

Expect local events. Volunteer with non-profit organizations. Lead rather than continue to start or lead a community action group and take on important issues in your area. Show a genuine interest in the future of your community. Just remember that you should always be sincere in everything you do.

Step 3: Meet and greet other small business owners.

In addition to (or perhaps instead of) a geographic farm, consider having a “commercial farm.” Find ways to interact with local business owners. Offer to promote them on your website and blog. Create cross-promotion opportunities. A small business farm will not only connect you with the leaders in your community, but it can also connect you with all of your customers and clients. Always strive to give more than you receive, and you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts.

Starting a career in real estate is challenging at best, but with a little effort on your part, you can become the expert in the area in no time, and it sure beats sending postcards!
