With the surge in deaths due to COVID-19, BBMP crematoria are facing space shortages. One crematorium in Chamrajpet, which took up more than 20 bodies each day, put a ‘Housefull’ board at its gate.

While a few Sumanahalli crematorium are preparing to expand, others are closing temporarily. However, BBMP has ordered that no fees should be charged for the cremation of COVID-19 patients.

During the past week, over 100 COVID-19 patients have died in Bengaluru. Families and volunteers had to queue for hours at crematoriums to complete last rites. This delay in the process also pushed up the cost of funerals.

Sumanahalli crematorium is located on Magadi road in Bangalore. It has three electric furnaces and a special room nearby which allows families to conduct last rites respectfully.

It has an RCC drain, benches, restrooms and a shower area. It also has an animal crematorium for cremation of pets, goats, dogs, horses and buffaloes.

This crematorium is open for business from 8 am to 6 pm, 7 days a week. You can book a cremation using the KUMAR website or through their app and receive an acknowledgement of your booking by email.

Pet owners can also use the facility to cremate their animals if they bring them with them and pay a small fee. There is a fee of Rs 300 for a small animal and Rs 1,000 for a large one.

The BBMP has set up an animal crematorium near the human crematorium at Sumanahalli. This facility is available to people who own domestic and pet animals and can also be used by animal welfare organizations to cremate their stray pets.

After the launch of the animal crematorium, 27 animals have been cremated so far. The BBMP has a total of six crematoriums in the city. These include Kudlu, MS Palya, Peenya, Medi Agrahara, Kengeri and Panathur.

Several complaints have been received about the quality of service being provided by BBMP crematoriums. Some have reported delays and hassles while others have claimed that the cremation process is taking much longer than expected.

A BBMP employee who works at the crematorium said that the situation has worsened as the number of deaths has increased. He added that the employees are not being paid well and are working overtime.

Many of them have been unable to get their salaries for months now.
