Someone emailed me the other day and said, in part: “Every time I run my fingers through my hair, at least ten hairs come out on my hands. I could do this all day with no end in sight. . that this number is too high. But how many hairs would be normal in this situation? “I will try to answer this question in the next article.

Normal daily hair loss is usually a small percentage of total hair volume: You will often read that it is “normal” or “typical” to lose up to 100 strands of hair per day. However, what you will not often read is that this number is based on the idea that it is also “normal” that between 10% and 15% of the total hair on your head is in the resting phase at the same time . So if you have less or more hair than the average person, then your typical loss could be greater or less than this number.

Also, as hair loss and hair fall progresses, the number that is considered low enough not to worry will also decrease, as the number of strands on the head is also decreasing. Therefore, even if you use the same percentages, the sum should be less. Simply put, in this scenario, the person is working with fewer threads than they originally had, so they can afford to lose less if they hope to maintain the same volume they have always had.

Variables that can influence the amount of hair that comes out of your hands: Another thing to consider is when did you try this experiment. If you’ve shampooed very recently, you may lose more because the handling involved in the wash loosens many of the strands that were expected to fall out. Likewise, many people will find that less hair comes out of their hands after they are finished brushing. This is because brushing will remove a lot of the loose strands. Probably the best time to try this is a few hours after brushing on a day when you haven’t shampooed recently. This will ensure that tampering is not causing much of the loss.

How many hairs do most people lose after running their fingers through it ?: This can be a difficult question to answer due to the variables I just discussed. Everyone has a variable amount of hair that becomes “normal” for them. And this may change based on what just happened to your regimen. What is perfectly fine for one person may result in very low volume for another. However, generally speaking, I have seen this question posed on many hair loss forums and tried it myself during times when I was actively falling out and when my hair was completely normal.

Most of the time, people who do not lose hair will come out with between 2 and 5 hairs without worrying about it. If they have recently brushed, they may not be getting anything at all. Often times, if you see more strands than these, it may be because you have just washed or handled your hair, or because you are losing or shedding more strands than normal for some reason.

People who have shed for reasons like telogen effluvium, androgenic alopecia, or allergic reactions can come out with a large number of strands in this situation. Some people have told me that they could easily get away with 10-20 strands and that this was true no matter how many times they tried this experiment. However, keep in mind that your doctor is far better equipped to help evaluate your hair loss than any experiment you can try on your own.
