The human mind is an incredible tool. Seems like whatever you use it for, it gets better. Just as a high performance athlete may be good at certain types of skills, he also develops new muscle groups due to his training. As they do it more and more, they do it better and better, and physiologically they change to meet the requirements. Well then, I’d like to talk about this for a moment if I may.
You see, having been an athlete, I know the fact, and after retirement I inadvertently became a writer, and I’m noticing some interesting changes. For one, I can read about three times faster than before. No, I haven’t taken any speed reading courses, it’s just that my mind seems to be better at it. Now, the other day I was talking to another writer, who also admitted to being a very good reader, and the better the more he writes.
So let me ask a question, which is also the title of this article; “Are Prolific Online Article Authors Faster Readers, Too?” Well, in fact, they tend to be substantially faster readers, but let me explain why that is or at least my theory behind this phenomenon. You see, as I read, my mind jumps and I finish its sentences as I read, before reaching the end of those sentences. In fact, I recognize certain speech patterns, phrases, and things that I’m normally used to.
Unless a given writer has a specific and unique way of writing, which I may not have found yet, then I’m amazed at how quickly I can move through paragraphs. Also, I’ve been noticing in the news online these days that the content is being scaled down to what I would consider a fifth grade reading level. So it reads very fast, with lots of common words, and you can scroll down the page at rocket speed. I guess this also helps those who aren’t very good readers, and anyone on the internet, but imagine how fast someone who can read quickly can move.
Also, as our society becomes emasculated due to social media and anything related to the internet, and as society finds itself with a lower attention span, this will become even more common. Therefore, the increase in speed in my case has been double; One internet writer is writing in very simplistic terms. And two, because I’m a writer, I inherently recognize certain techniques, which tells me to jump the page pretty quickly.
Okay, so how can this knowledge help you? Well, simple, if you want to read faster, try typing a little. He’s done miracles for me, and I bet he’ll do it for you too. Even if you can’t increase your reading speed three times, maybe you can double it, and that would be a wonderful thing with all the information flowing your way day after day.
