When Taiwanese phone giant HTC launched its flagship in March 2010, Desire quickly made waves in the mobile phone community. It featured the best of what the Android smartphone operating system could do. With these capabilities, it quickly won the phone of the year award. However, with the rapid evolution of technology, its features have now become obsolete. Fortunately, the Taiwan-based phone maker updated its old flagship in March this year. The Desire S was released.

If you compare both the predecessor and the successor, you might not notice as many changes. Their dimensions are relatively the same. The previous version is 119mm tall, 60mm wide, and 11.9mm thick. The current version is 115mm tall, 59.8mm wide, and 11.6mm thick. The newer version is now lighter at 130 grams, compared to 135 grams in the past. Both sports versions have a 3.7-inch S-LDC capacitive touch screen.

If you take a look under the hood, there are slight differences. Both the predecessor and successor pack 1GHz single-core processors under the hood. Both versions are equipped with 5 MP cameras. However, when we take a look at memory, the HTC Desire S has the upper hand. It comes with 1.1 GB of ROM and 768 MB of RAM, compared to 512 MB of ROM and 576 MB of RAM in its predecessor. This will significantly improve the performance of the successor.

Going back to the cameras of both smartphones, they can both have the same number of megapixels. However, the newer version will let you enjoy HD more. The Desire’s video recording quality only offered WVGA video. The update will allow you to enjoy more 720p quality videos right out of the box. The original version will need to be updated to Android Froyo (version 2.2) so that you can enjoy more HD.

When it comes to Android iterations, the HTC Desire S comes pre-installed with the latest smartphone-optimized Android operating system. It comes pre-installed with Gingerbread. In its successor, the Gingerbread update is coming soon. However, it comes at a price. When implemented, it will sacrifice a number of preloaded features to make way for the software update. This is due to a lack of memory in the old phone of the year award winner. With HTC Desire S, you’ll experience the best Android has to offer right out of the box.
