Across the United States, a number of states have approved legislation that allows the legalization of sports betting. Some states, like Nevada, allow in-person wagering while others, like Pennsylvania, allow the wagering of sports on the Internet. Some states also allow wagering at racetracks and other state-run casinos. Some states even allow single-game betting.
Several states have passed laws in the past two years that allow the legalization of sports betting. One of the largest markets in the country has been Pennsylvania, which has allowed sports betting since 2017. This year, Pennsylvania has surpassed $7 billion in bets placed. It’s also one of the top states in dollars bet all-time. In addition to sports betting, the state has an array of online sportsbooks.
While Pennsylvania has been one of the leading markets, three other states have yet to launch legal sports betting in the state. These states include Connecticut, Virginia and West Virginia. These states have a lot of potential, but the legalization process is uphill. It will take at least a year for Connecticut and Virginia to become legal sports betting states.
What States Is Sports Betting Legal?
In Virginia, online sports betting will launch in January 2021. The state has approved 14 sportsbook operator licenses. In 2022, the state will also start accepting single-game bets from residents. In 2023, online sportsbooks will be allowed to offer wagers on in-state college sports. The state also has authorized two additional outlets to operate sportsbooks.
Online sportsbooks in Virginia must be approved by the state lottery and must partner with a state-run casino. There are a number of operators in the state, including BetRivers, PointsBet and Barstool Sports. In 2023, sports betting will be allowed at casino facilities, racetracks, and state-run casinos.
Rhode Island is another state with a long, difficult road ahead. Governor Gina Raimondo has signed a bill into law that authorizes sports betting, but the state will not begin accepting single-game bets until fall. The casino industry is also slow to move on sports betting. It is unlikely that Rhode Island will pass a bill by the end of the year.
Pennsylvania is a state that has a huge population and a high-profile sports team. It’s also one of the few states that has approved online sports betting. However, there are concerns about how Pennsylvania is regulating the sports betting market. The state has higher taxes than other states. The state also does not allow fantasy sports.
New York is another state that has been moving towards the legalization of sports betting. The state’s legislature has been moving toward the legalization of sports betting for several years. Governor Cuomo has previously stated that a sports betting bill will not pass this year. The legislature has passed resolutions that extend the legislative session and may advance the bill next session.
Massachusetts has passed a sports betting bill, but it will not be considered this legislative session. The state legislature will consider a bill in 2022, but it will not be voted on until the session is extended.
