Compared to power blade tools like circular saws, power belt sanders are much less intimidating to use and are much safer. Despite this, users should be aware that a belt sander is still very heavy equipment that packs a lot of power. It can be very dangerous if general and specific instructions are not followed carefully. Here are 10 safety rules to keep in mind when operating a belt sander or any power tool.

  1. Keep your work area clean, well lit, and free of debris. Clean up accumulated dust particles or flammable liquids. Belt sanders can produce sparks that can ignite dust or fumes.
  2. Do not carry the power tool by the cord as it may cause the cord to break and expose. If the cable is damaged or exposed, replace it immediately.
  3. Avoid wearing loose clothing, jewelry, or watches that can snag. If you have long hair, tie it up or keep it contained.
  4. Wear safety gear. Wear eye protection, dust mask, hearing protection, and helmet for all appropriate conditions. Glasses and regular sunglasses do not count as eye protection.
  5. Make sure belt sander is off before plugging in. Do not connect the sander with your finger to the power switch. The sander can get away from you quite easily when you are not ready.
  6. Do not expose the sander to rain or wet conditions.
  7. If the sander comes with a dust bag, make sure it is securely attached to the spout.
  8. Use a clamp or some other practical way to secure the workpiece to a stable table. Using your hand or holding it against your body is not a safe method. It can cause the part to fly off causing serious damage to yourself and your work.
  9. Don’t overdo it when sanding, as it can cause you to lose your balance and fall. Always keep the proper balance, keep both hands on the belt sander and move with your sander for better control and remember to wear proper footwear.
  10. Be alert when using any power tool or heavy equipment. Do not operate it under the influence of medications, drugs or alcohol.

There are more safety rules than can be listed, but I have a list of 10 that I feel most directly relate to belt sanders. Portable power tools and any hand tools are an essential part of everyday life. Following safety procedures and using tools safely will make our lives easier and safer.
