Just like in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, you can also perform combos. But unfortunately, the game makes you win every hit. In Street Fighter, a single move can land multiple hits, and in Mortal Kombat you can press a single button and still land multiple hits. But the good news is that these combos are much easier to chain than in SF and MK, and skilled Primal Rage players can pull off some flashy, damaging combos.

The characters, as already said, are five dinosaurs and two apes. Everyone has their own reason to win the tournament. Blizzard, Armadon, and Talon mean well, while Chaos, Diablo, and Vertigo mean bad. Sauron is neutral, although he tends to lean more towards the bad side, but he is also one with the good side. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses in the game, although Talon is a favorite due to his speed and size.

Just like in Street Fighter, you have to go from one place to another and fight the other six fighters in their specific stages, and just like in Mortal Kombat, you have a mirror showdown at the end. Once you complete all of that, you get a bonus stage where you can eat the humans loitering below for extra energy (you also have these humans loitering below during each fight to regain some of your lost energy). After that, you must fight all seven characters once again in a brawl with each character entering the stage in style. If you manage to get past this, you conquer Urth.

You probably won’t like the music in this game because of the prehistoric feel it has. But there is one exception: The Ruins (Chaos stage). It has an urban and hip hop feel to it and is easily one of my personal favorites in video game music. The sound effects don’t have the snap and pop that Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have, but the crackle and rip are present.

The gameplay, while similar to SF and MK, is a bit slower. It’s not that newbie friendly and has a bit of a learning curve due to all the complicated button presses and directions. But overall, this is one of my favorite fighters. My favorite character was Sauron, and a friend of mine liked Chaos. I remember inadvertently fatalizing Diablo during a fight with Chaos in the arcades, and always wondered how I did it. FURY!
